Since I have only been investing for the past 8 months or so, there have been few opportunities to experience the delight of a stock holding make an announcement of an increase in the dividend. But that is exactly what happened with ADP yesterday.

The ADP dividend increase announcement not only increased 10%, but it brought the forward yield over 3%, which assuming all the other fundamentals are the same, make it a buy right now. I have already placed my buy limit order, and hope that it executes in the next few days.

You must be a shareholder of record as of December 14, 2012 to benefit from the upcoming dividend distribution, so if you think the current drop in share price is likely to continue for the next month, maybe hold out for a better entry point between now and then.

I bought 5 shares of Automatic Data Processing at $55.05. My Reasoning: Though my career isn’t that long and storied, I have been with three different-sized companies. My wife has been with several others, including the federal government. From employer to employer, we have only had three payroll processors, Paychex, ADP, and SurePayroll (a Paychex company.) As an employee, I have found SurePayroll the easiest to access online, but that’s probably…

Late last month, I bought 10 shares of Sysco at $28.46. My Reasoning: I have long known the power of Sysco (not to be confused with the technology company Cisco.) I came to know them for everything from urinal fresheners to the largest cans and bottles of food I had ever seen as a young child. And their silver trucks are simply everywhere I look! With a strong distribution network and…

I added six shares to my stake in General Mills at $38.55. My Reasoning: I felt like I was seeing a little bit more volatility than I’d like at this point in my portfolio building, plus I was really only in about a half position compared to some of the larger holdings, so the price had climbed up a bit, but not out of the realm of reach, I didn’t…

I bought 4 shares of United Technologies at $71.33. My Reasoning: I first became interested in this company when I realized nearly every building I went into had elevators manufactured by Otis, a subsidiary of United Technologies. When I learned that this was just one of several large brands in their purview, I knew that this was one I wanted to hold long term. The fact that it operates in the…
